The Kawhi Leonard injury saga has been one of the weirdest developments of the 2017-18 NBA season, as the San Antonio Spurs star has elected to sit out even after he reportedly was determined to be fully healthy following his mysterious quad injury.
While there have been reports of friction between Leonard and the Spurs organization, Shannon Sharpe believes another injured NBA star has played a huge role in the small forward’s decision to sit out: Isaiah Thomas.
The injured Los Angeles Lakers guard injured his right hip last season while playing with the Boston Celtics, and never fully recovered, causing him to undergo season-ending hip surgery last month. The injury likely cost Thomas the huge payday he was hoping to receive this offseason, leading Sharpe to surmise that Leonard is viewing Thomas’ situation as a cautionary tale.
Sharpe explained his point of view on Tuesday’s episode of FOX Sports 1’s “Undisputed.”
Leonard is slated to be a free agent next offseason, and likely will command one of the NBA’s largest contracts if he is healthy, so there’s reason for him to be cautious with injured quadriceps muscle as the 26-year-old won’t want to miss out on a nine-figure payday like Thomas did.
