Reports: Ex-Red Sox Catcher A.J. Pierzynski Joining St. Louis Cardinals

A.J. PierzynskiThe St. Louis Cardinals will bolster their depth at catcher by signing veteran A.J. Pierzynski.

Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports reported Friday night that Pierzynski already is in Chicago, where the Cardinals will continue their three-game series with the Cubs on Saturday and Sunday.

According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, “multiple sources with knowledge of an imminent deal confirmed that he was set to join the Cardinals.”

St. Louis’ starting catcher Yadier Molina will miss at least another month following thumb surgery, which created the need for a veteran catcher on the Cardinals roster.

Pierzynski became a free agent shortly after the Red Sox designated him for assignment on July 9. He hit .254 with four home runs and 31 RBI in 72 games for the Red Sox.
