Gone Again?: The Case Of The Absentee Sports Show Host

Most above-average interest sports fans have their favorite sports news personalities. Whether it's guys like ESPN's Stuart Scott, sports talk's Jim Rome or the NY Daily News' Mike Lupica, fans associate with certain people when it comes to hear and discussing the latest follies and happenings between the lines. With a lot of choices out there for sports media these days, it isn't tough to find at least one favorite voice among the crowd.

If lucky, some of these personalities are associated with their own show. Some of my favorites include ESPN's Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon on Pardon the Interruption, ESPN's Mike Greenberg and Mike Golic on the Mike & Mike morning radio show and Glenn Ordway on WEEI's The Big Show, the top-rated sports radio show in Boston.

Lately, I've noticed a trend that can be chalked up to vacation or just plain time-off, but I'm going to ask it anyway: why does it seem like the hosts of these shows are never on their own show?

Bonds HR chase is over...now what?

I couldn't sleep last night for a variety of reasons and decided to turn on the last few depressing innings of the Red Sox/Angels game. As I nestled up to the tv at the foot of my bed, I saw the scroller that I knew was coming for months now: BARRY BONDS HITS HOME RUN #756, SURPASSING HANK AARON TO BECOME BASEBALL'S ALL-TIME HOME-RUN LEADER. I watched the rest of the game, went to bed upset about the Sox's plight and woke up this morning like I always do.

This morning, the questions for those that care: "What's your reaction?" and "What now?'

Pro Sports Media Minute: Home Run Derby

Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiikes.

That was my reaction after finishing up the near three-hour Home Run Derby last night on ESPN. Usually more fun to watch at times than the All-Star Game itself, the HRD is a chance for some of baseball's stars to wow the crowd with tape-measure blasts off the arms of coaches throwing hard enough for t-ball players to get good wood on a shot.

Some quick thoughts on last night's event...

It's Been That Long?

November 6, 2006.

That was the last post on the PSM blog, which is supposed to be "for our customers and partners who use our web-based software each day to manage their team sites." Well, despite the world of sports still going on and PSM still alive and kicking, we have neglected to do any updates here in over half a year. Sorry 'bout that.

So what's happened since we spoke to you last?

Notes from a guest NHL marketer...

It’s November 7 and the temperature in Los Angeles is 90 degrees. The team is on the road and so things are unusually quiet in the office.  So what should I do on a beautiful day like this?

Go to the beach?

Lay out in the sun?

Take a nap?

Read a book?

How about going for a skate?

With the team on the road for a game in Colorado later tonight, today is the perfect day to take advantage of the wonderful sheet of ice located just downstairs from my office here at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, the practice home of the Los Angeles Kings.

So after taking care of a few things in the office, I head downstairs to the locker room, put on my skates, grab my stick and gloves, and go out to the ice for an hour-long workout.

Back in the office after going for a skate, and my attention turns to the week ahead. It’s slow - by hockey standards - right now, but that will change quickly when the team returns home after tonight’s game. The Kings on Thursday night will begin a five-game homestand at Staples Center, and that mean’s long days for everybody involved with the team.

The Pittsburgh Penguins just recently wrapped up a west coast road trip with games against the Kings, the San Jose Sharks, the Phoenix Coyotes and the Anaheim Ducks. The Kings and the Penguins did not meet last year, so last Wednesday night was our first opportunity here in LA to see Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin up close and at Staples Center.

The tandem was as good and as entertaining as advertised, and the sellout crowd at Staples Center was treated to an entertaining, end-to-end game full of scoring chances. The Penguins won the game in overtime, with Crosby collecting three assists and Malkin scoring two goals, including the game-winner.

The game also featured a strong performance from the Kings’ Dustin Brown, who collected two points (1-1=2), had six hits and finished with a plus-2 rating.

The Penguins are probably the marquee team in the league right now with all of their young stars.  They are also a good example of an organization that has built itself into a playoff contender by being patient and developing from within with draft picks. In Wednesday night’s game, the Penguins lineup included each of the club’s last six first-round draft picks.

It’s still early, but something else is becoming very clear, the Pacific Division is loaded with three teams that have a great chance to win the Stanley Cup this year. As of today, six NHL teams have 10 or more wins, and three of the teams reside in our division. The Anaheim Ducks (11-0-4), the Dallas Stars (11-3-0) and the San Jose Sharks (10-5-0) are off to great starts.

The fourth place Kings host one of those tough teams - the Sharks - on Thursday night.

VP of Common Sense

In his columns on ESPN.com lately, Bill Simmons – prompted by the Houston Texans drafting Mario Williams ahead of Reggie Bush - has been advocating for the creation of a position called Vice President of Common Sense.

He writes:

Every professional sports team needs to hire a Vice President of Common Sense, someone who cracks the inner circle of the decision-making process along with the GM, assistant GM, head scout, head coach, owner and whomever else. One catch: the VP of CS doesn't attend meetings, scout prospects, watch any film or listen to any inside information or opinions; he lives the life of a common fan”.

By doing so, he thinks organizations could eliminate (or reduce) the number of bad decisions that groups with access to too much information or who are too close to a problem often make. The VP of Common Sense would always be a step back from everything and have more perspective.

Goodbye Agassi

I must first gloat in the fact that I was fortunate enough to not only watch Agassi play tennis, but I was lucky to see him play one of those "match for the ages" matches. 2:00 am - Flushing Meadows - US Open 2005 as he finished off american James Blake in a 5th set tie-break. THE most magical sporting event I have been to.

<

The tennis world (and business world) is a better place for having Andre show us how to compete and how to pursue perfection over the past 20 years. The inspiration he gave me at age 14 playing night tennis in my neighborhood is the same stuff that gets me to the gym in the morning, stay up late making our products better and just motivates me every day to be a better person.

The single lesson I learn from having been lucky enough to follow Andre is to never give up.

Thanks Andre.

New Site Feature

We just added a cool little web site interface feature to the roster pages of your team site.

When you visit a roster page (for an example - visit the Nashua Pride baseball team site or click image below). When you mouse-over a player name, you get a handy little pop-up window allowing the site visitor to preview the player picture and profile.

Mouseover_1

The great thing is - you don't have to do anything new. Just add players as normal and this new feature will show up!
