NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Mourners are filling the pews at New Orleans’ historic St. Louis Cathedral for the funeral of Tom Benson, the Saints and Pelicans owner who died last week at age 90.
Tourists and locals thronged outside the church in the city’s French Quarter ahead of Friday’s funeral Mass for Benson.
Mayor Mitch Landrieu, Mayor-elect Latoya Cantrell, Saints and Pelicans players, team executives and NFL and NBA representatives were among those heading into the cathedral.
Friday’s Mass was an invitation-only event that followed two days of public visitation at Notre Dame Seminary.
Benson was a successful automobile dealer when he bought the Saints in 1985. Under his ownership, the team achieved its first winning seasons and a Super Bowl championship. He bought the city’s NBA franchise, the Pelicans, in 2012.
